BURNEY, Calif. -

A 17-year-old girl was killed in an ATV accident in Burney on Thursday. The accident happened at 7:25 p.m., north of Highway 299 near Goose Valley Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Cody Munson, 22, of Shasta Lake, was riding an ATV with his 17-year-old cousin when he hit a rock and lost control of the vehicle on a dirt road. Both he and his cousin were ejected.

Munson, who had moderate injuries, took his cousin to the nearby Pit River Gas and Mini Mart, where a worker tried performing CPR.

Munson was taken to the hospital but his cousin was not so lucky. According to CHP, when the 17-year-old girl was ejected, it caused internal bleeding.

"The driver of the quad hit a big rock, the passenger, a 17-year-old female, got thrown from the quad runner and according to his statement, she struck a large tree were she sustained major injuries," said CHP Sergeant Ron Farris.

Munson was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. The girl's name is not being released pending the notification of her family.
