Talk about a sneaky suspicion. Two brothers were arrested after a cut in a fence led a Chico officer to follow up on the suspicious scene. Officer Regan Ortega was patrolling the area around Lowe's Home Improvement on 2350 Forest Avenue in Chico close to 10:30pm Sunday night. That’s when she noticed a cut in a fence in the Garden Department.
Officer Ortega called for back-up. Officer Rich Hartman arrived on scene with his canine partner, Luna. An announcement was made for anyone hiding to come out. Russell Wayne Castor, 40 years old of Red Bluff came out of hiding from under a semi-truck at the loading dock. He was taken into custody.
Russell denied anyone else was with him when questioned by officers. Despite Russell's denial, officers continued to announce warnings for other to come out of hiding. Patrol Officers entered the Garden Department and found Russell’s brother, Brian Linden Castor, 34 years old of Red Bluff, hiding.
Brian refused to comply with police and leave his hiding spot. Luna was sent in to apprehend him. An investigation confirmed that the Castor brothers were in the process of burglarizing Lowe’s just as Officer Ortega showed up.
The Castor brothers were booked into the Butte County Jail and are facing several charges.
According to police, Officer Ortega was aware of recent home improvement stores being burglarized in Chico. Officer Ortega was later praised by her Watch Commander, Lt. Mike O’Brien.
Lt. O’Brien told KRCR News Channel 7, “It was a piece of excellent work by Officer Ortega doing her job and finding this suspicious circumstance.”
