Bidwell Park Burned Bodies
CHICO, Calif. -

Chico Police are investigating two burned bodies found in Bidwell Park Wednesday morning.

The bodies were discovered in the area of South Park at Cedar Grove off East 8th Street.  The area is closed to traffic.

Police said the incident was reported at 5:50 a.m. Wednesday.  A neighbor called 911 after hearing a loud noise in the park, and seeing a small fire.

Firefighters extinguished the fire, and discovered two burned bodies.

Chico Police Lt. Mike O'Brien said the bodies of the man and woman have been tentatively identified.  Police are working to confirm the identities of the victims and notify their families.  He said the woman appeared to be in her early 50's.  The names were not released.

O'Brien said rangers in Bidwell Park believe they have made frequent contact with the man and woman in past.  It's believed they were transients who often camped in the park and other areas of the city.  Police found a mattress and personal belongings in the area where the bodies were discovered.

Investigators said initial reports indicates foul play was not involved.

The California Department of Justice is on scene assisting with the investigation, along with Chico Fire Department and Chico Police Department.
