Church Puts Signs Up to Prevent Leaf Dumping

CHICO, Calif. -

A City of Chico Ordinance has forced one church to use signs to prevent people from dumping leaves on its property--an offense meriting a fine for commercial businesses.

The Congressional Church of Chico has placed signs along its property saying "Please Don't Dump Your Leaves Here" after a landscaper was blowing leaves onto the property.

Because of the Chico Ordinance which forces commercial properties to manage their own leaves, the church's pastor, Jim Peck, said he decided to put up a half-dozen signs to prevent more leaf dumping.

Residents in single-home properties can dump unwanted leaves in a pile on the street and the City of Chico will come and pick the leaves up. For commercial properties however, businesses must take the leaves to a trash can, the compost facility on Cohasset Rd. or to one of the 10 designated leaf drop-off places in Chico.

If business-owners do not comply, they could be stuck with a $112 fine on the first violation.
