MAGALIA, Calif. -

Firefighters are crediting a dog for alerting its owner who escaped an early morning fire that destroyed a home on Butte County's ridge.

The fire was reported at 5 a.m. Friday from a home at 6630 Woodward Drive in Magalia.

The home was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

CALFIRE said the fire was burning in the living room when the dog alerted its owner who was sleeping at the time.

The woman and her dog were able to escape safely before firefighters arrived but the home and the contents were destroyed.  Damage is estimated at $130,000.

The Red Cross is providing assistance.  CALFIRE said the home did not have any working smoke detectors.   CALFIRE Public Information Officer Mary Ann Aldrich said they credit the dog with saving its owner's life.
