Durham Hit-and-Run Driver Pleads in Court

OROVILLE, Calif. -

A 71-year-old man pleaded guilty tonight after fatally hitting a 61-year-old on his bike in Durham.

Anton Mardesich decided to come clean after authorities found hair in his windshield.

In court on Wednesday, the defense said that Mardesich just couldn’t handle all of the pressure and pleaded guilty to felony charges including hit-and-run causing death and insurance fraud.

Mardesich hit 61-year-old Rick Magee on Nov. 14 while Magee bicycling on the Midway near Roble Road.

Mardesich is a farm manager for the Mariani Nut Company in Gridley and was driving a company SUV.
Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said Mardesich told investigators he accidentally hit Magee after he looked down while driving.

He later took the SUV in for repairs, saying that he had hit a tree.

But when a glass repairman found a human hair in the windshield, he alerted the company secretary that he had a hit-and-run accident in the company car.

She remembered that the California Highway Patrol was looking for a grey vehicle in connection with the accident and she called the CHP.

The defense said in court on Wednesday that Mardesich is truly sorry for what he did.
