Tuesday is Fat Tuesday and for those that plan on observing Lent, it is still not too late to buy king cakes.
Great Harvest, a local bakery in Redding, has been busy baking king cakes. They got the recipe from the Harvest Bakery in New Orleans.
Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday”. Fat Tuesday refers to the practice of eating richer, fattier foods before the ritual fasting of the Lent season which starts on Wednesday.
"The baby Jesus is baked right into the cake and the person that receives the piece of cake with that figurine is king of the party and is obligated to bring the king cake to the next celebration,” says Gus Burgoyne, owner of the Great Harvest.
Mardi Gras colors also have a meaning -- the purple represents justice, the green represents faith and gold power.
