Firefighters responded to a fire that destroyed a home in Redding early Thursday. It burned a home in the 300 block of Beagle Lane just off Bechelli Lane.
The fire was reported around 6:30 Thursday morning.
Minutes before the fire broke out David Henry who works for The City of Redding's Waste Management team was making his morning rounds when he smelled smoke.
"At first I thought my truck was on fire," said a surprised Henry.
However he quickly realized the home was on fire.
Henry said he called his office to have them make the 911 call while he quickly jumped into action.
"I just started beating on the door, yelling "City of Redding, City of Redding!" exclaimed Henry.
Angela Geraldi lives next to the now destroyed home she said the knocking woke her up.
"I got the dogs, got my keys and got out of the house as quickly as I could," said Geraldi.
Henry said as soon as he let Geraldi know about the fire he got out of the area as quickly as possible so the firetrucks could get to the fire.
He said it never crossed his mind not to stop.
"Well if someone in is in that situation you just do it. I didn't even really think about it. I knew it was the right thing to do," said Henry.
Geraldi said the home that burned has been vacant for about a year.
The Redding Fire Department estimates the damage to be about $60,000 and said the cause of the fire is under investigation but appears to be suspicious.
