REDDING, Calif. -

Gas prices are finally leveling off, and in some places even falling. California' statewide average gas price held steady overnight, remaining at $4.67 a gallon Wednesday morning.  (The actual price dropped a fraction of a cent, but not enough to lower the average when rounded to the nearest penny.)

That remains the highest in the country and a record for California. Prices also stayed the same in Chico overnight, holding at $4.53 per gallon.

In Redding, gas prices dropped 2 cents per gallon to an average of $4.59 Wednesday morning

The top average price in the state is $4.75 a gallon in the San Luis Obispo area.  The averages are for the metropolitan areas surveyed by Triple-A.

State officials predicted prices would fall after Gov. Jerry Brown ordered early production of a winter fuel blend to replace costlier summer blends.

The spike was partly driven by an August fire that partially closed a Richmond refinery. Chevron says it will remain closed through December.
