Hit-and-Run Accident Damages Congressman's Rice Farm

A hit-and-run accident Monday very nearly had disastrous consequences for Congressman Doug LaMalfa's rice farm, and for some members of his family.
The crash happened about 4 a.m. Monday on Highway 99 in Butte County when the driver of a big rig hit a power pole and then took off.
The crash definitely scared the LaMalfa family but luckily no one was hurt.
According to the family, a transformer exploded on a property across the ranch. It caused electrical lines to cross and sent 60,000 volts through their 12,000 volt line.
The results were disastrous; an office on the property caught on fire, and took out their electric, phone, and water service.
It also impacted gas lines on the property – which could have led to a major explosion.
On Wednesday, crews spent the day cleaning up the resulting fire, smoke and water damage.
The congressman's mother said she thought she was hearing thunder when the crash happened. The family said they are ready to move on from the incident.
It is not clear whether LaMalfa himself was home at the time.
California Highway Patrol is still looking for the driver of that semi-truck.
