BIGGS, Calif. -

A house fire has caused more than $100,000 worth of damage at Max's Miracle Ranch in Biggs.

Max's Miracle Ranch, a retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses, was named after the owners' son, Max, who had multiple heart surgeries due to a defective heart.

The family opened the ranch as a kind of amusement park for children with health problems where they have a train, animals and events.

The fire at the ranch was spotted by a passing driver around 2 p.m. Firefighters said that two-thirds of the house was engulfed in flames by the time they arrived on the scene.

No one was in the home at the time of the fire and the dog was not hurt. The family had left the home only a few hours prior to the fire to go to the Bay Area.

The fire took 45 minutes to contain.
