CHICO, Calif. -

For the third time in six months, Chico's Silver Dollar Speedway mourns the loss of a well-known driver.

Stephen Allard, 40, was remembered Saturday at the Chico raceway.  An estimated 1,000 people were on hand to pay their respects to Allard, who died of an unspecified cause on Christmas Eve.  He lived in Cameron Park.

Allard lived in Chico most of his life and attended high school there.  He became a champion race car driver winning two Silver Dollar Speedway sprint car championships.  He tied for the sprint car championship in 1996 and won it again in 2007.  He was remembered as a fierce competitior, good family man and good friend.

Allard's younger brother Jonathan won the 2002  Silver Dollar track sprint car title.

Allard is survived by his wife Lovleen and a daughter.
