On Thursday, a federal jury convicted 59 year-old Randy Barker of Chico for tax fraud, including three counts of filing false claims against the government.
United States Attorney Benjamin Wagner says Barker filed a false 2008 income tax return in February of 2009. Barker is accused of claiming more than $1.4 million in interest income. This false claim allowed Barker to get a refund of $987,900.00.
During the two-day trial, evidence was presented showing that Barker uploaded false documents to the IRS to hide his fraudulent claims. In addition, evidence was shown that Barker and his wife immediately spent the money by making cash withdrawals. They allegedly purchased a $495,000.00 home, more than $90,000.00 in home furnishings and a truck.
Barker’s charges include money laundering and conspiracy to defraud the United States. He is set to be sentenced May 1, 2013 and faces ten years in prison and a $250,000.00 fine.
