CHICO, Calif. -

A man is dead after being hit by a freight train in Chico.

Police are asking the public for information about who he is, and how it happened.     The incident happened just before 11:30 Thursday night on the railroad tracks near Big Chico Creek, that's just north of West First Street and the Wildcat Rec Center.

Police said engineer on the northbound Union Pacific freight train said the man was standing near the tracks and suddenly moved into the train's path.

The train stopped and blocked crossings from West 1st Street to West 5th Street until about 2:45 a.m.
