Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey sent out a press release warning local residents of a phone scam involving Medicare cards.
According to Ramsey, the scam began on the East Coast and has since moved west. He said that he has already gotten a few calls from local seniors to the Butte County Consumer Fraud Unit.
Ramsey says this is how the scam works: the scammer calls a victim, claiming to be from Medicare and informs the victim that his replacement Medicare card is in the mail. In the meantime, the caller asks the victim for his bank account number so that Medicare funds can be directly deposited into his account.
Ramsey said the caller may instead ask for a Medicare card number, which is the same as a social security card number.
Medicare confirms that it does not contact their beneficiaries unless the beneficiary contacts Medicare first. Medicare also stated that it does not ask for personal information or keep any personal information on file.
