OROVILLE, Calif. -

An alleged drunk driver caused a head-on collision Sunday afternoon in Oroville that injured one child, four juveniles, two pregnant women, the driver and her passenger.

Around 2 p.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to a reported injury collision on Montgomery St. Between Myers St. and Huntoon St.

Police said Shaina Appleyard, 18, was allegedly driving drunk in a 2003 Volkswagen. She had five passengers in her car, Alexander Favela, 29, Breanna Caracol, 25, and two 16-year-old juveniles. Police said one of the juvenile passengers was pregnant.

Witnesses to the accident said Appleyard was speeding eastbound on Montgomery St. when her vehicle veered into the westbound lane and collided head-on into a 2005 Toyota.

The Volkswagen then spun south and hit a sidewalk bench that a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old were sitting on, before crashing into a tree. Melissa Hetherwick, 29, was driving the Toyota and was reportedly 22 weeks pregnant. Her 4-year-old daughter was in the back seat.

When the Volkswagen hit the bench, the 15-year-old flew backwards into a storefront window and the 16-year-old fell off the bench and was nearly run over before the car hit a tree.

All nine people received minor to moderate injuries, and some were sent to the hospital.

Appleyard was later cleared from the hospital and booked into Butte County Jail on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs causing injury.

The investigation is on-going and additional charges may be filed with the District Attorney's Office.
