Power Restored to Whitmore Residents

Whitmore, Calif. -

The power is back on in Whitmore.  It had been out for hundreds of residents after an early morning transformer failure on Thursday.

Judy Dresen, who owns the Whitmore General Store, was without power for more than 36 hours.  She says since residents' well pumps are run by electricity, the lack of water has been the hardest thing.

550 people in Whitmore lost power around 1 o'clock Thursday morning.  It was caused by a transformer failure at a substation on Atkins road and crews have been working to restore power since then.  PG&E has put a mobile substation in place to temporarily restore power before a new transformer can be installed.

Power was restored around 2 o'clock this afternoon.  And  through it all, life went on.  By Friday afternoon it was like nothing happened.  Although the Whitmore community center bingo extravaganza was nearly canceled because of no electricity.

For those who chose to stick it out, PG&E tells us they set up a generator to allow residents to fill up on water and to warm up at the community center.

PG&E officials say it could take up to 6 months to get a new transformer in place.  The cause of the failure is unknown at this time.
