Redding Man Accused of Car Jacking at Gunpoint, Leads Authorities on Chase
Redding police say a man held another man at gunpoint early Saturday morning, demanding he get out of his vehicle.
Richard Raymond Sanchez, 22, of Redding is accused of car jacking 20 year-old Lance Bechtoldt at gunpoint in front of Tower Mart on Lake Boulevard and Oasis Road.
According to reports Bechtoldt was driving a 2004 Nissan Altima when Sanchez approached Bechtoldt with a dark colored handgun and demanded the vehicle. Fearing for his safety Bechtoldt turned the car over and Sanchez got in the car and fled west on Lake Boulevard.
Redding Police located the vehicle 6 minutes later around 1:00 a.m. on Lake Boulevard, west of Oasis Road when police pulled the car over and Sanchez took off running.
The Shasta County Sheriff's Department established a perimeter and with the help of numerous witnesses and a K-9 unit authorities tracked Sanchez to the 3200 block of Lana Ct. where he was arrested. However officers say he put up a fight and had to be pepper sprayed and forced to the ground.
During the chase Sanchez stopped at one point to change his clothes in an effort to alter his appearance. However, Bechtoldt as well as other witnesses were able to positively identify Sanchez.
Sanchez was found to be on parole for grand theft and was a parolee at large, wanted by State Parole.
