A retired doctor from Medford, Ore. is believed to be missing in Shasta County.
Medford Police said Max Eugene McIntosh, 75, was reported missing by his family earlier this week. Police believe McIntosh has diminished mental capacity and left his home without knowing where he was going.
The California Highway Patrol found his abandoned car Friday afternoon. It was pulled off to the side of the road and was completely out of gas.
He hadn't been reported missing yet, so they simply towed the Ford Explorer.
He was reported missing by his family earlier this week after they could not contact him. Since then, the Shasta County Search and Rescue Team has been trying to find him.
Shasta County Sheriff Sergeant Troy Clegg said they have been searching for him all day on the trails, lookout points and peaks. They even had a boat searching the coves and shoreline along Lake Shasta.
Sergeant Clegg said after CHP towed the SUV, they used a helicopter to try to locate its owner Sunday.
He told us the vehicle was left with the keys in it, the doors locked and a window down. He said based on that, they believe he either walked away with intentions of coming right back or abandoned it.
"There are two scenarios: he walked back to the highway and hitch hiked out or he's in this area, and that's why we're here. If he hitchhiked out we assume he's going to contact somebody at some point by now since he's been missing since Friday," Sergeant Clegg said.
Lieutenant Mike Budreau from the Medford Police Department said they believe McIntosh might be confused or have some sort of dementia because his family and friends have given them different stories, although he has not been diagnosed with anything.
He said McIntosh apparently told family members he was driving to Missouri to stay with them, but he told a friend he was meeting up with a woman he met online and that they were going to drive to Georgia.
Lieutenant Budreau said McIntosh's cell phone appears to be dead because they can't track it and his credit cards have not been used.
As of now, they have no clues but do not believe foul play is involved.
Anyone with information in regards to McIntosh's whereabouts are asked to contact the Shasta County Sheriff's Office or the Medford Police Department.
