NORTHSTATE, Calif. -

Hundreds of spending cuts are set to go into effect Friday, unless Congress can find a way to avoid them.

The Wildland Fire Management program is vital to the Northstate, especially in summer. The United States Department of Agriculture said that program could lose $134 million.

They said the impact could be immense.

The cuts create the potential for larger fires and more risk to communities, especially areas like the Northstate, which are more prone to wildfires.

One example they gave us is the possibility that the use of federal air support for fighting fires could be reduced.

The Agriculture Department also said the number of engines and hotshot crews could drop as well.
