Shasta College Football Player Attacked in Chico; In Critical Condition

CHICO, Calif. -

A Shasta College football player is in critical condition after he was attacked on a street in Chico during Halloween weekend parties.

Tyler Burton, 21, was walking with a group of friends on W. 8th Street around 1:15 Sunday morning.

Police said  the suspect, 20-year-old Andres Rodriguez of Citrus Heights, was walking with a group of friends in the opposite direction toward them.

Chico Police Detective Sergeant Scott Franssen said as the groups passed , a few of them bumped into each other. Rodriguez then allegedly punched Burton in the head and knocked him unconscious to the pavement where he hit his head once more.  Police found him unconscious.

Officers later found Rodriguez on Ivy Street near 8th Street in Chico and arrested him.

Burton was taken to Enloe Hospital and is in critical condition with a life-threatening head injury.

Rodriguez was booked into the Butte County jail on a charge of assault with great bodily injury. His bail is set at one-million dollars.
