REDDING, Calif. -

We've learned the man accused of shooting his neighbor in Shingletown on Tuesday has a criminal history.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. at the 33000 block of Plateau Pines in Shingletown.

Shasta County Sheriff's deputies said Hamilton admitted to shooting 42-year-old Lee Roy Tibault after being threatened and assaulted by him.

Hamilton told officers Tibault threatened to kill him with a chain saw and then attacked him with a bat. He said he was afraid he was going to be killed so he shot Tibault.

Hamilton was not arrested, but was questioned and released. No charges have been filed.

According to Shasta County Courthouse records, 56-year-old Lynn Hamilton has been arrested a handful of times.

In 2008, he was charged with disturbing the peace, which according to court records, he is still paying fines for.

In 2009, he was charged with battery and assault on a person, which was later dismissed.

That same year, Hamilton was charged with resisting an officer. He served about a month in jail for that and was then put on probation.

Hamilton was just taken off probation in May 2012.

He has also been arrested for a few other misdemeanors, such as having a concealed weapon and a loaded firearm in his car, but those charges were eventually dismissed.

We talked with Hamilton Friday morning to try and get his side of the story. He declined to talk with us at this point, but said he might in the future.

Deputies are still investigating the case.
