One day before the football Super Bowl, high school students in Butte County faced off in an academic Super Bowl.

The Butte County Academic Decathlon was held Saturday at Pleasant Valley High School.  It featured 69 students from five high schools.  The students represented Durham, Las Plumas, Oroville, Paradise and Pleasant Valley High Schools.

The event is a team competition in academics for high school students in grades nine through twelve.  Academic Decathletes compete in teams of six to nine students and involves students of all levels of academic achievement; to ensure that the program is inclusive of students of varying ability levels.

Students will take a series of tests in the subjects of language & literature, math, art, music, science, social science, essay, speech, interview and economics.  The competition ends with an oral Super Quiz, a fast-paced question and answer relay.

The first place school wins the perpetual trophy and will represent Butte County in the California Academic Decathlon, March 14-17th.

In addition to the students, there were 50 judges and proctors, and many volunteers working behind the scenes.
