REDDING, Calif. -

An early morning truck fire lit up South Market Street in Redding.  The fire destroyed the cab of a truck parked in the storage yard behind Knowles Trucking at 3411 South Market Street.

The call came in around 5:30 Wednesday morning.  Firefighters found the truck fully engulfed in flames.

Redding Fire Battalion Chief Cullen Kreider said investigators believe a transient or transients broke into the sleeper cab of the truck, looking for a place to spend the night.  Kreider said it's not known if the transients accidentally or intentionally set the cab of the truck on fire.

Owners said that there were no batteries in the truck, leading firefighters to believe that someone may have been inside using a candle to stay warm.

The owner of the trucking company told firefighters he's had a recurring problem with transients breaking into trucks on the property.

The owner of Knowles Trucking told firefighters the truck had just been sold and the new owner was scheduled to pick up the truck on Wednesday, just hours after the fire destroyed the vehicle.

The owner also said that this is not the first time this has happened and that Knowles Trucking will be putting in a new alarm system.

The truck was a total loss, it was valued at approximately $10,000.
