Big Rig Crash Closes Highway 99 in Butte County
CHICO, Calif. -

A late night big rig accident closed Highway 99 south of Chico in Butte County.

Caltrans Public Information Officer Deena Shoopman said power lines fell across the road, and caused the highway to close for several hours.

The accident happened late Thursday just before midnight on Highway 99 near Nelson Avenue just north of Biggs.  The accident is about 15 miles south of Chico.

A big rig hauling 43,000 pounds of onions crashed thru 50 feet of guardrail and took out a portion of a concrete headwall (a small bridge that crosses a ditch).  The truck then continued and took down a power line and transmission line.

Northbound traffic is closed at Highway 162.  Traffic is being detoured to Highway 70.

Southbound traffic is closed at Highway 149.

The detour is expected to add approximately 25 minutes to drivers' commutes.

The accident also knocked out power to 39 customers.  PG&E is on scene making repairs.

The truck is registered to Nor Cal Trucking in Live Oak.  The driver was not injured.  According to Nor Cal Trucking, the truck was traveling south from Oregon to Stockton.
