A jury has convicted the McKinleyville woman who drowned her 2-year-old daughter in the Trinity River last year.
Claudia Pedreros will will be headed to a mental hospital instead of prison. Monday in Trinity County court, a jury found Pedreros guilty of involuntary manslaughter, instead of murder.
Monday night, jurors deliberated in the sanity phase, and determined that Pedreros was insane when she committed the crime. She will be committed to a state hospital.
After drowning the girl in May of 2011, authorities found Pedreros walking nude along Highway 3. Investigators said she admitted to the drowning. Defense attorneys argued in court the 30-year-old had a long history of mental illness, dating back to age 15.
Pedreros will be back in court January 7 at 8:30 a.m. for a report from the Department of Mental Health.
