The Redding Fire Department had a busy night Tuesday. They were dispatched to two separate structure fires, both reported within three minutes of each other.
At 11:02 p.m. fire crews arrived at 251 Hilltop Drive for a report of a bathroom fire. When officials got there they found that the occupants were safe outside and able to shut off power to the bathroom fan and put out the fire. Fire investigators said the cause of the fire was due to equipment failure.
Minutes later at 11:05 p.m. crews were sent to Family Carpet Center at 3424 South Market Street near Veda Street where firefighters said paramedics had found a man on fire.
A storage building next to the business caught fire. When firefighters arrived they found a transient man believed to be in his 40's on fire in a parking lot across the street. The fire was quickly put out and the man was taken to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment.
It was not immediately clear if the man had been sleeping inside the building or if he caught fire while trying to extinguish it. The damage cost is estimated around $5,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
