One Dead, One Hurt in Overnight Crash
SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. -

One man is dead and another was seriously hurt after a pickup truck overturned on Iron Mountain Road early Saturday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 2:20 a.m. near Matheson Road, in the same area where officers were in the midst of a DUI investigation involving a minor.

Two adults were in the truck.

The driver, John Svedeen, 22, was partially ejected in the crash and died at the scene. The passenger, Darrin Ruhe, 38, was fully ejected, and taken to Mercy Medical Center. Officers say neither was properly restrained.

Investigators say Svedeen was driving his 1986 Toyota pickup southbound on Iron Mountain Road when he allowed the truck to travel off the west edge of the road. They believe he then made an abrupt turn to the left causing him to lose control and flip over.

Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
