Although she maintained a 4.87 grade point average while playing three sports in high school, West Valley High School's Taylor Ross was shocked and overjoyed when she opened her acceptance letter to West Point Military Academy.

Ross said she decided to work hard and try to get into a military academy her sophomore year. She began the lengthy application process last May and got her acceptance letter a few weeks ago.

"I was actually having a really terrible day and I came home and there was a package and I was like they wouldn't spend five dollars to tell me no," Ross said. "So I opened it and um... it's very extravagant, you know? They want you to come obviously. I was pretty excited and tears of happiness just that all that hard work finally paid off."

Ross is going to visit the campus with her mother over her spring break to finalize her decision.

If she accepts, she will head to New York state and report for basic training on Jul. 1.

After four years at the academy, Ross will graduate as an officer in the U.S. Army and will serve at least five years there.
