BURNEY, Calif. -

A woman with a gunshot wound to her hand called 911 from the Pit River Mini Mart Sunday afternoon.

According to a Shasta County Sheriff's Office press release, Loraine Avelar, 33, walked into the store on Tamarack Avenue just after 2:30 p.m.

When investigators arrived, she told them she was near Jack Rabbit Flats in Burney when a man with blond hair pointed a gun at her.

She told deputies she tried to wave the gun out of the way and that is when the gun fired, hitting her in the hand.

But deputies say witnesses they interviewed later Sunday afternoon did not agree with Avelar's story.

According to a press release, Avelar's injuries were treated and did not appear to be life threatening.

The investigation is ongoing.
