An Italian vacation turn a violent turn when a a Chico man was attacked outside a landmark in Italy.
Don Brennan, 68, was stabbed outside a cathedral in Florence during a robbery attempt.
Back home in Chico, Brennan's neighbor David Weis was devastated when he found out Brennan was nearly killed on his vacation. But Weis said Brennan's sense of humor will help him recover and make it home safely.
“They had to take out his kidney and he was stabbed in the lung,” said Weis.
Weis lives next door to Brennan and his wife in Chico. He got the news in an email from Don's wife Wednesday morning.
“I just got that sinking feeling in my stomach, and I said could this be true and turns out it was,” said Weis.
Police in Italy identified the suspect as Antonio Antonelli.
An Italian newspaper, The Firenze Post, reported Brennan was watching a street performer when Antonelli tried to rob him. Weis said Brennan tried to fight him off but couldn't.
The crime was reportedly caught on video, but the weapon has not been found. Weis tells us, Brennan is still in intensive care but is awake and in good spirits.
“He's kind of joking with the nurses and wishing he could ravioli in his IV,” said Weis.
Weis said he looks forward to seeing his friend back in the states.
Brennan is expected to be transferred out of the ICU Friday.
