Redding Police arrested an AB-109 parolee early Wednesday, after a foot chase that led them to the Sacramento River.
It started Wednesday at 3:53 a.m. when officers responded to the Hilltop Garden Inn at 5050 Bechelli Lane, for a report of subjects trying to go through vehicles.
When officers arrived, they attempted to detain John Wilkinson, 48, of Redding. Police said Wilkinson, who is on AB 109 supervision, picked up a sharpened stick approximately the size of a baseball bat. According to a news release from Redding Police, Wilkinson brandished the weapon at officers by assuming a batting type stance.
Police said Wilkinson told officers that they would have to kill him before he would return to jail. Wilkinson then ran off and tried to run down the steep embankment toward the Sacramento River. He lost his footing and fell down.
Wilkinson went into the river, then came back up the embankment. Police K-9 Carr was deployed and Wilkinson kicked the dog in the face. Officers used batons to strike Wilkinson to subdue and arrest him.
Wilkinson was booked into the Shasta County Jail for brandishing a weapon at a peace officer, felony resisting a peace officer, and battering a police dog.
K-9 Carr will be medically checked at a later time.
