OROVILLE, Calif. -

The CHP said alcohol likely played a role in a crash that left a Butte County man seriously injured.

The collision happened just after midnight Monday on Upper Palermo Road just south of Wheeler Avenue.

The CHP said Rocky Hultz, 31, of Palermo, was seriously injured when his 2000 Saturn crashed into a tree.

Officers said he was southbound on Upper Palermo Road when due to his level of alcohol intoxication, he veered off the right side of the road and hit the tree.

Hultz was trapped inside the car and had to be extricated by firefighters.

He was flown to Enloe Medical Center for surgery where he was listed in serious condition.
