Police responded to reports of shots fired early Tuesday morning in Central Chico.   The incident happened about a block away from the Chico State campus in the 800 block of Rancheria Drive.

The exchange started at 1:18 a.m. with an argument between people on the balcony of an apartment on Rancheria Drive, and a man riding by on a bicycle.  It ended with the arrest of 30-year-old Joshua Douglas for negligent discharge of a firearm.

Police said a woman at the apartment originally said the bicyclist shot at her and her friends several times from the sidewalk.

But the bicyclist flagged down an officer and told a different story.  He said he'd argued with a man in front of the apartment, and then shots were fired at him.

Police said during the investigation, Douglas came out of the apartment complex and contacted officers to say he had accidentally discharged his firearm while arguing with a man in front of his residence.

According to police, the woman who reported the incident provided a false statement to officers to protect Douglas.  It appeared Douglas was trying to scare the bicyclist away while armed with a firearm.

Fortunately no one was hit by the gunshots.  Police said there were bystanders in close proximity to Douglas during the incident.
