Chico police arrested a suspect on Friday in an interrupted sexual assault that occurred in late January 2012.
On Jan. 25, 2012, a woman reported that she was in her apartment asleep when she woke up to being sexually assaulted.
The assault was interrupted when her boyfriend returned to the apartment from a walk in the neighborhood. The male suspect left on foot while the boyfriend followed while calling Chico Police.
Chico Police detectives then conducted a follow-up investigation in which a suspect, Jeremy Scott was identified.
The victim, who believed he may have been an acquaintance from Butte College, used social media to learn his name. Detectives were able to secure a search warrant for a DNA sample from Scott which was later submitted to the Department of Justice for comparison to DNA collected from the victim after the assault.
In May 2013, the Department of Justice completed the analysis and confirmed that the DNA collected after the assault matched Scott's. Chico police secured an arrest warrant for Scott and took him into custody on Friday.
