Avoid the 8 campaign arrests dozens of drunk drivers

CHICO, Calif. -

DUI arrests are on the rise in Butte County.

Officials say 53 drivers have been arrested for drunk driving this holiday season in Butte County so far.

Police said those drivers were arrested between Dec. 13 and Dec. 25.  That's a jump from 46 last year.
The Paradise Police Department holds the grant for the Avoid the 8 campaign for Butte County.
They said the majority of the arrests happened in Chico. 

Officers have started to prepare for the New Year's holiday.

"It is overtime for the officers," said Paradise Police Sergeant Rob Nichols.  "It can be anywhere from two officers for a small city to five to six for a big city. Their efforts are trying to find drunk drivers."

There will be a DUI checkpoint on Tuesday just outside the city limits of Chico on the Skyway.  Officers advise everyone if you plan to drink this New Years take a cab home or arrange to have a designated driver.
