LAKEHEAD, Calif. -

A man is dead after being chased by CHP officers on Interstate 5 around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

It all started when big rig carrying timber crashed spilling the load on the road about 20 miles north of Redding near Gilman Road.  The signs along Interstate 5 warned northbound drivers of the accident ahead.

Investigators said the driver of that big rig, Robert Campbell of Redding, was found a short time later on the freeway acting in an erratic manner and making bizarre statements.

Officers tried to take Campbell into custody but he bit an officer on the arm, ran through lanes of traffic, then jumped off of an overcrossing and onto Stanton Rd. He was injured and they rendered first aid and transported Campbell to a hospital where he died.

Redding police are handling the investigation because Campbell was being chased by CHP officers when he jumped.
