CALFIRE: install smoke detectors

Published On: Apr 10 2014 08:11:02 PM CDT
REDDING, Calif. -

We are slowly entering fire season and CAL FIRE is reminding everyone to make sure that their smoke alarms are properly installed.

According to the National Fire Protection Association the death rate of victims inside homes that don't have working smoke alarms is twice as high as homes that do.

According to the Smoke Alarms in U.S. Home Fires report more than one third of home fire deaths resulted from fires in properties with no smoke alarms and one- quarter were caused by fires in which a smoke alarm was present, but not working.

CAL FIRE says it’s important to remember this when installing and checking your smoke detectors:
-Install one in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home including the basement.

-For best protection interconnect all smoke alarms.

-Replace all smoke alarms every ten years or sooner if they do not respond properly when tested.

-Make sure you test all smoke alarms once a month.

"A lot of that has to do with contemplating, believing that a fire is never gonna happen to me,” said Battalion Chief J.T Zulliger. “It could just be something that's not first and foremost in their mind, it’s important to remember that most fires occur at night when people are sleeping that's why we recommend to change batteries out of the smoke detectors twice a year."
