A dramatic series of crashes in Chico on Sunday caused a chaotic scene on Mangrove Ave, and sent one woman to the hospital with serious injuries.
Chico police say a grey Toyota Tacoma pickup driven by 59-year-old Michael Bilinsky was involved in three separate accidents.
The first was just after 2 p.m. Sunday when a car was struck by the truck at East 1st Ave.
The next was shortly after near East 3rd Ave.
Police say Bilinsky, who may have been having some sort of medical problem, then continued down Mangrove at a high rate of speed, estimated at about 60 mph, before hitting a black Honda Civic head-on at Cohasset Rd. and the Highway 99 overpass.
According to witnesses, the pickup then went airborne and hit the front of a maroon Kia sedan before rolling down the overpass embankment on the north side of Cohasset Rd.
The impact to the Civic was so strong that it pushed the vehicle back nearly 100 feet before it came to rest.
Its female driver had to be extricated. She was taken to the hospital where she is listed in serious condition.
Bilinsky was also taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.
No one else was injured in the other accidents.
Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash.
The roadway was closed for several hours so the scene could be investigated and the roadway cleared.
