Charges dropped against man accused of luring girl

OROVILLE, Calif. -

Charges have been dropped against an Oroville man accused of trying to lure a young girl into his car.

Edward Sylva, 67, was arrested Sunday for an incident at USA Park in Oroville.

Saturday a four-year-old girl claimed that Sylva tried to lure her into his van to go to the bathroom.

On Tuesday, Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said the charges will be dropped because they simply don't have enough evidence to move forward.

"We have to prove that his request, or his offer, to this little girl was initiated because of an unnatural sexual interest in children and quite frankly there was no evidence of that," said Ramsey.

Sylva is now under the guidance of the behavioral health department in hopes he'll cease making such offers to children.

Ramsey also said Oroville Police were right to arrest Sylva.

On top of the suspicious behavior, Ramsey said police action helped to avoid an escalating confrontation between him and some little league parents.
