CHICO, Calif. -

The Chico community, particularly college students, are on edge and coming together to keep each other safe after a bold attempted kidnapping Friday night.

An email alert was sent out by Chico State University over the weekend to warn students.

The attempted kidnapping happened on the 1200 block of West Sacramento Avenue around 8 p.m.

A 21-year-old Chico State student told police she was walking in the area when a man said something to her and she replied in an attempt to brush him off.

Soon after she says a plastic bag was put over her head and she was slammed against a vehicle.

Fearing she was going to be forced inside, she fought back, kicking the man and getting away.

A female Chico state student who lives nearby told KRCR on Tuesday night she was scared by the news and knows the dangers that lurk in the area.

"That was pretty frightening for a lot of us, especially those who live on Nord (Avenue)," said Daena Hakim. "It's really dark, and that's the problem. We don't see a lot of lights and especially for students because this is a student populated area. And so not a lot of us feel safe walking to and from school, especially at night."

Hakim also said upper classman are warning lower classman which areas to avoid at night - particularly the bike path which has been a hotbed for crimes in the past.

In that way, they're using the campus community to keep each other safe.

The description of the suspect is not very detailed, likely because it's so dark in the area.

He's only described as a white or Hispanic man, 30 to 35 years old, wearing dark clothing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Chico Police Department.
