The head of the Chico Fire Department will be retiring.
The department said Fire Chief James Beery notified Chico City Manager Brian Nakamura of his decision on Wednesday.
Beery is citing personal reasons for the retirement, saying he would like to spend more time with his family. Fire officials said Beery was not forced out, and the decision was entirely his own.
The Chico firefighters union was first to make the announcement using social media.
“Fire Chief James Beery announces he has given his notice to City Manager that he is retiring,” said Chico Firefighters IAFF 2734 on both Facebook and Twitter.
Division Chief Keith Carter will serve as interim chief.
No date is set for when Beery will step down. He has more than 30-years of firefighting experience.
