Thanksgiving is a day for faith, family, friends, food and football. For one Chico man, it’s also a day for fantasy football, as he campaigns for the Fantasy Football Hall of Fame.
Tucked away inside his one-bedroom Chico apartment, Steve Gardner is a legend in the making.
“I've managed over 287 teams with 89 trophies,” said Gardner.
Gardner is in his 30th year of playing fantasy football. On Thanksgiving morning, he and his daughter cheered for Jordy Nelson and Reggie Bush, two players he needed to have big games to help his make-believe teams.
Watch Gardner wheel and deal on his computer for a few minutes and you know you’re in the midst of greatness.
“You can make an all-fantasy team with Nick Foles and Rashad Jennings,” said Gardner.
In between scouring the waiver wire and adjusting his teams' lineups, Gardner is a sales representative for Build.com. He wishes he could get paid to manage fantasy football.
“I spend about 40 hours a week, and working overtime doing it,” said Gardner. “I'm watching the NFL Channel and ESPN, and all of the sports shows.”
“The thrill is when you're watching football, fantasy football is the game within the game. You don't have to necessarily cheer for your favorite team. So not only are you into the game, you feel like you're a part of the game.”
There are only 14 people in the Fantasy Football Hall of Fame.
Five more will be added, and Steve Gardner would like to be one of those.
