Chico Police Car T-boned During Attempted Suicide Incident
CHICO, Calif. -

A Chico Police officer was treated for minor injuries Wednesday night after his squad car was hit while responding to a suicidal subject on a Highway 99 overpass.

Officers were responding at 8:20 p.m. on the Highway 99 overpass on Cohasset Road.

The subject was hanging from a rail on the overpass and threatening to jump.

Sgt. Rob Merrifield of the Chico Police Department said Officer James Dimmit made a u-turn on Cohasset Road with his emergency lights on in an attempt to block the northbound Highway 99 on-ramp.

The driver of a sedan didn't see Dimmit and crashed into the side of the patrol car.

The sedan's driver complained of knee pain.

The driver's 15-year-old son was also in the car but was not injured.

The suicidal subject was eventually convinced to climb off the rail and was taken into custody.  He was transported to Enloe Hospital on a mental health hold.

The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation.
