Chico State Professor takes on Wal Mart in new book

Published On: Mar 06 2014 07:59:53 PM CST
CHICO, Calif. -

A Chico State professor is set to release his book exposing the battles between Wal Mart and one of its non-profit organizations.

Professor Curt DeBerg wrote the book, How High is Up?

The title DeBerg said came from a saying by former Wal Mart CEO Jack Schumacher.

In the book, DeBerg exposes how the Chico State chapter in a non-profit organization called Students in Free Enterprise he started with Schumacher was cheated during a competition.

Students in Free Enterprise is funded by Wal Mart and gives students the opportunity to reach out in their community.

DeBerg ran the Chico State Chapter. He took the team to the SIFE International Title in 1999, and won Nationals in 2002. Prizes included extra funding for the chapter to conduct other community projects.

DeBerg said that in the 2003 national competition, the Chico State team didn't make the top 15, and he said that the competition was not judged properly.

"When in fact I know there has been at best gross negligence and I think if you read the book most readers would understand that there was some cheating,” said DeBerg.

DeBerg also discusses how much he believed in the SIFE program, so much so that he started his own non-profit student community outreach program called SAGE.

His book will be released next week and you can order it on amazon.com.
