Chico State volleyball player receives All-America honor
A Chico State volleyball player has added a new honor to her growing list of achievements.
Torey Thompson, a freshman setter, has been named All-America Honorable Mention by the American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA). The award is the sixth postseason honor Thompson has received since finishing the 2013 season. She is the second Chico State setter in as many years to earn All-America distinction.
Hoping to find someone that could fill the shoes of graduated All-America setter Sable Villaescusa, Chico State Head Coach got all that and more from Thompson. During her first year of collegiate play led the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and ranked among the top 15 setters nationwide in assists per set (11.46). With Thompson at the center of the offense, the Wildcats posted a solid 16-13 record in 2013 and a fourth place finish in the CCAA.
As a result, Thompson has been on the receiving end ofnumerous postseason accolades. Prior to Wednesday's All-America announcement, Thompson earned All-CCAA First Team honors and was named the conference's Freshman of the Year, followed by All-West Region honors from both the AVCA and Daktronics. The AVCA also named Thompson the 2013 West Region Freshman of the Year.
