WILLOWS, Calif. -

A CHP officer is recovering after he was hit by a car along Interstate 5 in Glenn County.

The collision happened Wednesday around 1:15 a.m. on northbound Interstate 5 just south of Willows.

The CHP said Officer Joseph Stokes, 51, pulled over a Hyundai Elantra for a traffic violation.

Another driver, 20-year-old Vitaly Davidyuk of Elverta, was northbound in a Ford F350 pickup.  The CHP said Davidyuk fell asleep behind the wheel and drifted onto the right shoulder.  The trailer he was pulling  sideswiped the Elantra on the side of the road.  The impact caused the Elantra to slide sideways and hit one of two CHP officers, knocking him to the ground.

Officer Stokes was taken to Glenn Medical Center to be treated for pain in his lower back.
