REDDING, Calif. -

Citizens helped arrest a man who led police on a chase on Wednesday after he wouldn't pull over for talking on his cell phone while driving.

Charles Lloyd Smith of Redding was driving just after 8 a.m. Wednesday morning near Hilltop Dr. and Cypress Ave. in Redding.

Redding police said when an officer tried to pull the 25-year-old man over for talking on his cell phone, he took off.

As the chase neared heavy traffic toward Highway 44 east and Shasta View Dr., the officers had to back off for safety reasons.

Later, an officer found the suspect's blue van abandoned at the rear of the Holiday Market at the corner of Shasta View Dr. and Hartnell Ave.

Citizens told police that Smith went inside, and later they helped identify him as he came out.

Smith was wanted for burglary, probation violation,  drug charges and driving on a suspended license.

He was booked into the Shasta County Jail for felony evasion and outstanding warrants totaling $405,000.
