Deputies announced on Saturday that two hikers found with gunshot wounds on the Iron Canyon Trail on Friday were shot after a robbery and left for dead.
According to investigators, Francis “Pat” Gregory, 69, of Massachusetts and a 76-year-old male friend from Manton were walking on the Iron Canyon Trail off Highway 36E, north of Red Bluff, between 11:30 a.m. and noon on Friday.
There, they encountered a man who pulled a gun and demanded money and other items from the victims.
After the robbery was completed, deputies said the suspect shot the victims and left them in the remote area about 100 yards from the trail head. An uninvolved hiker came upon the two victims approximately three hours after the shooting, hiked to the trail head, and called 911.
Gregory died at the scene from his injuries. The other victim suffered gunshot wounds and was flown to the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Detectives describe the suspect as a white male adult, approximately 6 feet tall, with a thin build, short black hair, and a black mustache/beard, wearing dark colored denim pants and a dark or black t-shirt with unknown design on the front of the shirt.
The Sheriff's Office is asking anyone that may have been at or near the Iron Canyon Trail between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2014, or anyone who has seen or recognizes a person that matches the description of the suspect to call Detective Jeff Garrett at (530) 529-7920 Ext. #3032 or Tehama County Sheriff’s Dispatch at (530) 529-7900.
