CHICO, Calif. -

Black Friday is officially here, although for most big-box stores like Walmart and Target, the biggest shopping day of the year started on Thanksgiving this year. Small businesses in places like Downtown Chico are also vying for your holiday shopping buck.

Downtown is all dressed up in holiday spirit, enticing shoppers with its decorations, but more importantly, luring them into their shops with their own Black Friday deals.

Shoppers found good deals downtown.  “I got a new pair of boots and a new pair of shoes for 40 percent off,” said Erica Hudson. “It’s very exciting.”

Deals like that and the small-town charm of downtown makes what store owners hope will be a profitable combination.

“I think people start at the bigger stores,” said local business owner Anne Crutchfield. “And then they come downtown after they get those things, like the big-ticket items they want. Then they come to shop at the local stores, because we have a lot of deals too.”

The real test for downtown comes on Small Business Saturday on November 30 when Downtown could be filled with shoppers.
